Start and end in Addis Ababa! Ethiopia, the country where coffee originated, is renowned as one of the world’s biggest coffee producers, coming in at #5, and the largest producer in Africa. Kaldi, an Ethiopian goat herder, is credited in ancient Ethiopian literature with discovering coffee and its mystical properties around 850 AD. According to legend, he found his goats dancing madly and eating the coffee fruit from the trees. He brought them home since he was so enthralled by these “magic” beans. When Kaldi explained their virtues to a monk, the latter flung the beans into the fire and said that this magic effect was the devil’s work. Naturally, the beans started to roast, and the aroma of freshly roasted coffee filled the entire area. (The practice of brewing coffee as a beverage dates from a far later period.) The area in southwest Ethiopia where coffee was first found growing wild is where the word “kaffa,” or “coffee,” first comes from. Here, unlike practically every other nation that produces coffee, coffee trees organically grow.
