This is a full-day City Tour of Addis Ababa and it takes 8-10 hours. The tour starts around 9 am and you will be picked up by your Guide and Driver from the Airport (if your arrival is this morning) or Hotel. National Museum of Ethiopia

This is Ethiopia’s primary Museum and houses the nation’s artistic treasures. This is one of the best museums in the diversity of the exhibits and your visit will give you a glimpse of Ethiopia. The museum has four main exhibition sections and the most famous exhibit is the Paleontological showcase where you can see the 3.5 million-year-old fossil of Lucy, ‘ Dinkinesh’ in Amharic meaning ‘wonderful’, a hominoid woman of the specious of Australopithecus Afarensis. Lucy’s fossil was discovered in 1974 at Hadar, Afar Region and this big discovery changed the way we understand Human Evolution. The exhibit on the first floor contains objects from ancient and medieval periods, as well as regalia and memorabilia from former rulers including the famous Emperor Haile Selassie. The other Exhibit contains artwork in chronological order, from traditional to contemporary works while the third floor comprises rich ethnographic displays.

Mount Entoto & Old Palace of Emperor Menelik II

Short drive to the north of the capital and take in the panoramic view of Addis Ababa from Mount Entoto, the highest peak in the city. Entoto Mountain was the site of a palace and the royal court to Emperor Menelik in the 1800s. The Entoto Mountain is known as the “lung of Addis Ababa” because the dense forest regulates the climate condition of the city. On top of this mountain, you will visit the palace of the Mighty King Menelik II who kept Ethiopia independent from Colonial Powers. Also, you will explore the Entoto Maryam Church museum. One the way down from the mountains, stop at Shiro Meda to visit Ethiopia’s largest local market for Traditional Clothes with displays of Ethiopia’s finest hand craftsmanship.

Merkato Market

Merkato is the largest open-air market in Africa. If you’re a market lover, this is the place that you shouldn’t miss when you visit Addis Ababa. The market is arranged into separate areas for different items. It is one of those markets, that if you know where you look, you’ll find anything you want from electronics to clothes, heavy industrial steel girders to tires, and all that goes in-between can be found. Navigating the market, with the many different sections, and the continual flow of vehicles, people, and livestock makes the Market to be an amazing sight to see. Also, Merkato is the cultural center where people from different Ethnic groups meet to sell and buy. Today you will explore the market by walking to the most interesting section.

Holy Trinity Cathedral

The Trinity Cathedral is one of the major churches in Ethiopia and the resting place of the Legendary Emperor Haile Selassie, the last king of Ethiopia. This massive and ornate cathedral, dedicated to the Holy Trinity, was built by Emperor Haile Selassie l in 1944. It is one of the architecturally decorated, spacious, and well-designed churches in Ethiopia. Holy Trinity Cathedral is the highest-ranking Ethiopian Orthodox cathedral and one of the most important places of worship in Ethiopia. Inside the church, there are some grand murals, the most notable one is the depiction of the Holy Trinity, with Matthew (man), Mark (lion), Luke (cow), and John (dove) peering through the clouds. The immense stone coffins of the Emperor and his wife as well as some relics of the Emperor’s time are also found inside the cathedral. Here you will also visit a small museum on the grounds that has over 146 various religious manuscripts, icons, ceremonial items, paintings, gold, silver embroidered robes, umbrellas, crosses, and books that date from the 15th century AD. The compound is the place of burials for Patriots and other most important people.

Piazza

Piazza (Piassa) is an old part of Addis Ababa. Here you will have a short walk to see Old Italian, buildings, other historical Houses, Jewelry Houses, cafe and also masses of people transiting to different parts of the city. It is a good highlight of Addis Ababa’s way of life. You can also see the famous Taitu Hotel, the first modern hotel in Ethiopia and still in use.
