About Tour Package

This is a day trip from Addis Ababa which takes around 8 hours (180kms two way). You will be picked up by your Tour Guide and Driver from Addis Ababa Bole International Airport or Hotel in Addis Ababa and then the trip will start at 8 am. This day trip gives you the opportunity to visit three important historical sites. Drive south of Addis Ababa through the beautiful countryside landscape and cross the Awash River – one of the biggest rivers in Ethiopia. First, you will stop at Adadi Mariam Rock church which is located 65kms from the capital. Adadi Mariam is carved out of a single piece of rock in the 13th Century AD by the famous King Lalibela. Then proceed towards Tiya where you will see 40 huge stone grave markers erected in memory of local heroes between the 12th to the 14th Century AD. Next, you will explore the Melka Kunture Prehistoric Site to visit an open-air excavation site and learn the archaeological findings from the area which covers more than a million years. Finally, you will drive back to Addis Ababa. In the evening there will be a farewell dinner in Ethiopian Cultural Restaurant with cultural dances of different Ethnic Groups. Finally, you will be transferred to Airport, if your departure is this evening, or Hotel.

EXCURSION TO DEBRE ZEYIT LAKES

Lake Bishoftu

This is a beautiful circular lake that lies at an altitude of 1,870m and it is the closest lake to the town. It is believed to be the deepest lake in the area with 87m maximum depth. The rocky steep slopes and the presence of resort hotels at the crater rim attract people. Lake Bishoftu is accessible by a steep path and is often frequented by locals particularly during the warm summer for swimming. You will have a top view of the lake from the top of one of the Resorts around this Lake.

Lake Hora

Lake Hora is the largest in the area and most frequented by locals and Travelers. The annual Thanks Giving Ceremony called Ireecha is celebrated every September by the Oromo People on this lake. They give thanks to God and good fortune is sought for the upcoming planting season. The lake is situated only 1 km north of the town and features some outstanding birdlife along its lushly vegetated slopes. There’s a footpath around the lake and you will have a short walk and admire the lake and see some birds. Here, Marabou Storks and Cranes are common. Other birds are Northern Pintail, Northern Shoveler, Garganey, and Hottentot Teal, Tufted Duck, Black-tailed Godwit.

Lake Kuriftu

Kuriftu is a scenic Lake, Known for its year-round beauty, is the smallest in the area. It has fresh water and Fishes and water birds like ducks and geese are common here. The Lake is home to Kuriftu Resort &Spa, one of the finest resorts in Ethiopia, and is popular for its water park. The first of its kind in Ethiopia, this water park is the largest in East Africa and offers different activities which give fun for travelers and are worth a visit in Debre Zeit.

Lake Baboogaya

Babogaya is the most accessible lake to visitors with its wide lakeside area. It is a circular lake and has exceptional views with its backdrop of volcanic mount Yerer and its wood surroundings. This is another best site to see beautiful water birds and it is rich in Tilapia Fish. The lake is filled with clear water in which it is possible to swim and take out a kayak. There are beautiful resorts around the lake with a magnificent view of the lake. You will have a boat trip here.
