This day trip takes you to Zikuwala Volcanic Mountain. You will be picked up by your tour guide and driver from Addis Ababa Bole International Airport or your hotel in Addis Ababa and then start driving to the mountain via Bishoftu. Located 60km south of Addis Ababa, Zikuwala is known for its Creator Lake and volcanic mountain, and it is the best place for hiking. Mount Zikuwala is situated in the Ethiopian Rift Valley System at an altitude of 2,989 m. On top of the mountain, you will enjoy a spectacular view of the surrounding highlands.

DAY TRIP ZIKUWALA MOUNTAIN & LAKE

Zikuwala Mountain & Lake

Mount Zikuwala is a volcanic mountain in the Ethiopian Rift Valley System and is located around 60kms from Addis Ababa. This mountain rises 600m above the surrounding plains at an elevation of 2,989m. A circular creator lake known as Lake Zikuwala is located on top of the mountain. The lakes’ water is believed to be the holy water of the ancient Zikuwala Monastery. The maximum depth is 60m and with a diameter of 2,000m. Lake Zikuwala is surrounded by a forest where visitors see the wildlife (Colobus Monkey and the endemic Menelik’s Bushbuck), birds (Ethiopian Oriole and Abyssinian Woodpecker). The climb to the top of the mountain takes around 2 hrs and the view from the top is outstanding. It is advisable to be in good physical fitness to do the climb up to this volcanic mountain. Another site to be visited on top of mount Zikuwala is the 13th century Orthodox Monastery which is one of the pilgrim sites for the Ethiopian Orthodox church faithful. The area is almost pure wilderness, and well preserved.
