Lakes of Debre Zeit

Debre Zeit, The Land Full of Water

Bishoftu or Debre Zeit has been a popular weekend getaway for decades. Known for its seven lakes, each now surrounded by luxurious resorts, it became the go-to relaxation spot for Addis Ababa residents.
Five of the area’s seven lakes are crater lakes, naturally formed in a volcanic crater or caldera following an eruption. Lake Bishoftu is the deepest in the area, with a maximum depth of 87 meters, and the second deepest in Ethiopia. On the contrary, Lake Babogaya and Lake Hora, draw many to their banks for fishing, swimming, or even canoeing.
The Lakes and their forests are home to a wide variety of birdlife such as black-backed cormorants, a handful of Egyptian geese, and even pied kingfisher.
