Cambalala Of The Sidama

Fichee Cambalaalaa

An intangible UNESCO-registered heritage festivity that symbolizes the New Year for the Sidama people.  According to the oral tradition, Fichee commemorates a Sidama woman who, every year would bring her relatives a dish to share with the neighbors. Nowadays, children visit their neighbors who serve them the dish” buurisame”, which is made with a false banana. This festival includes other communal events, concluding with clan leaders reminding the community about virtues like working hard. Transferred by families and participation in the festival, the practice encourages peaceful co-existence and good governance.

The dates of the festival differ from year to year and each year, astrologers determine the correct date for the next festival, which is then announced to the clans. The communal events take place throughout the festival, including traditional songs and dances. Every member, regardless of age, gender, or social status, participates.
